Whether by telephone or online, your credit counseling session will consist of the
following steps . . .
- Collecting contact information. This will include your home address, email
address (if you have one), phone number, etc.
- Asking for your Social Security Number. Don’t be alarmed. Your counseling
session is strictly confidential and secure. We obtain this information in order
to retrieve a portion of your credit report which helps in the credit counseling
process. Obtaining your credit report will not affect your credit score. (It’s a
“soft pull” in credit industry terminology.)
- Reviewing monthly expenses. How much is your mortgage or rent? How much do
you spend on groceries? Phone? This information creates a true picture of your current
financial status which will help determine the best solution for you.
- Providing a personalized solution. Based on all of the information provided,
debt solutions and referral options will be provided to you. These may include social
service assistance, mortgage assistance, self-study educational materials and a
Debt Management Program (DMP).
- If the
Debt Management Plan is the best solution for your situation, you will be provided
with;
- your monthly payment amount
- the time frame it will take to pay off your debt
- the amount of money you will save in interest
